Besides traditional system administration traffic, Ruby on Rails applications frequently either need to send or receive email for their day-to-day features. Ruby on Rails provides libraries to make email handling simple, but you are still required to have a working email server (and associated DNS records) for your incoming or outgoing traffic to function.
