Prototype
Prototype is a JavaScript framework that greatly simplifies the creation of sophisticated interfaces using JavaScript. It provides a rich set of browser-independent methods, eliminating the need to deal explicitly with differences in browser implementations. Prototype is a spin-off from the Ruby on Rails project, but it is not tied to Rails. Rails includes Ruby helpers that wrap Prototype methods, making them available from pure Ruby code.
